How To Improve Posture

Maintaining good posture can be hard, there’s no denying it. But the good news? Posture, just like any other skill, can be learned and developed. All it takes is determination, consistency, practice and a little more than just reminding yourself to sit up straight.

Now, before we go any further, you may be asking yourself – why is good posture even important? Or, in other words, why should you try to improve it?

The answer is that good posture hosts a variety of both physical and aesthetical benefits. A few include:

  • Helps prevent injury, specifically during exercise when it’s vital to maintain good form
  • Improves balance
  • Can reduce headaches and general tension throughout the body
  • Helps keep bones and joints correctly aligned, ensuring the body distributes weight evenly and uses muscles correctly
  • Can help improve self esteem

In order to improve your posture, you must not only strengthen the muscles but have a clear understanding of what good posture is. To achieve good standing posture stand tall with your head extended upwards, chin tucked in and shoulders back. Let your arms hang naturally and stand with your weight over the centre of your feet.

Your posture is maintained as a form of habit but can also be improved by strengthening the muscles. Here are five exercises to help improve posture:

  1. Plank – improves core strength and helps stabilise muscles.
  2. Side plank – helps maintain the neutral alignment of the spine.
  3. Cat cow – stretches and massages spine to help release tension and improve circulation.
  4. Bird dog – promotes stability, can help relieve lower back pain and encourages a neutral spine.
  5. Child’s pose – lengthens spine and helps release tension.
